8 Hours in Peniche, Portugal

Updated: May 8, 2020

Sights

Baleal's post-apocalyptic style high rises, contrasting the bleak planes of wind-swept sand dunes.

A golden sunset over the Atlantic ocean, as seen from the Bar da Praia.

Bright, bold blues and pastel hues of typical Portuguese village houses.

Sounds

Digraphic Latin rhythms of the Portuguese language.

Smells

Explosion of aromas at Peniche's indoor market: fruit, vegetables and lots of freshly-caught fish.

Sensations

The feeling of getting into a freshly bought, Portuguese-made sweatshirt purchased at Peniche Surf Shop, whose owner has called this Atlantic village his home for several decades.

Sinking toes into the cool sand after a cold and revitalizing salty surf session.

Tastes

Portugal's national treasure: sweet, succulent and creamy custard tarts, Pastel del Nata
