Sand and Rust. The Judean Desert.

Writer's picture: Cerys JonesCerys Jones

Here are a few shots taken while roving through the wilderness. More than 60 percent of Israel's land is desert. This particular region south of Jerusalem, which straddles both Israel and the West Bank, is known as the Judean Desert. It is arid, unforgiving, and mighty beautiful.

Descriptions, by photograph:

  1. Moses infamously encountered a burning bush in the desert. We have clearly moved on as a species, and now burn cars. I instantly fell in love with these photogenic relics which look like they've come straight from an unlucky Mad Max chase.

  2. Some very friendly donkeys chilling under vast plantations of date palms. We met them whilst stopping to answer nature's call on the side of the road. If you've never tried it, there's nothing quite as satisfying as pissing in the desert.

  3. A ramshackle home on the shores of the Dead Sea. Some lonely (or very peaceful, mind you) soul had set up camp here with a shanty settlement of his own. I would have liked to meet the inhabitant of the tent/ shelter/ glorified den, but unfortunately he was nowhere to be seen.

  4. A common sight in the area. At first my dad and I just scoffed at these warning signs, and decided we'd like to explore any part of the region we fancied, thank you very much. That was until we found out these signs exist to protect oblivious tourists like us from walking into the massive sinkholes which appear here...
