Montmartre, Paris, sometime in early April.

“Hmm, English this family, I can tell from the shoes”.

“Yeah really?”

“Definitely, and these too. Oh no, actually, more Balkan, or Greek…what about these guys?”

“Ohh Korean, definitely”.

We spent over an hour like this, immersed in a trance of people-watching and avidly guessing where passers-by hailed from. Sat on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur upon Montmartre, gorging on fresh Parisian pastries, I think my friend Ari and I had found the prime spot for this activity.

Paris attracts over 30 million visitors a year, and I could bet that the majority of them pass over this famous hill at some point. The basilica, the quartier of Montmartre and the vista of the city are truly unmissable. But take a moment, or a few hours, to sit and watch the people. Observe the expressions, listen to the conversations, note the outfits, especially the shoes, try and guess where they may be from. A word of warning, this pastime becomes rather addictive.
