Deptford High Street.

08/01/2022.

I took these photographs a few months ago on Southeast London's Deptford High Street.

Far from royal bling and grand avenues, this is one of my favourite stretches of tarmac in the whole of the capital.

A stroll down Deptford High Street is like an intrepid wander through time and space. You can dine on Chinese Hot Pot, Jamaican Jerk chicken, rice and peas and patties, West African curries and breads, Indian Street food, dosa and chaat, and greasy spoon-style English full monty. You can hit one of the many Vietnamese Pho joints, thrift for treasures in charity shops or dance in the central square to reggae tunes blasting from portable speakers.

Every shop front like the ones above beckons you into stories of discovery. Stories of colour and flavour, recipes and religion, friendship and hardship and family, migration, integration, fusion, fission...stories waiting to be heard...
