The infamous Cold War era crossing between Soviet occupied East Berlin and West Berlin's American sector. The stuff of spies, soldiers, Soviets, Sammy's andâŚscammers, it seems.
On this particular afternoon, a group of about eight individuals stood on this busy tourist avenue, pretending to take part in a betting game which involved placing fifty euro bills under cups and guessing where it was once the cups had been moved extremely quickly. Once in a while a member of the group who was in on it would 'bet' and exclaim with exaggerated jubilation as they 'won' double their amount of euros. And more than once, an unsuspecting tourist would be lured in, only to lose their bet as soon as they'd placed it. This went on for a considerable while.
We stood a few metres away and observed the scene with perplexed fascination. @evieadams_x and I listened to @earth_to_hunter as he explained the whole scam to us with perceptive detail. The entertainment we enjoyed outmatched any sympathy we felt towards the innocent scam victims.
Funny thing is, had it not been for Hunter, I would have most probably found myself a fellow scammed tourist too, set back fifty eurosâŚ
